Kalmar shows multi-purpose Altec machine
Altec distributor Kalmar has been demonstrating a multi-purpose insulated device aimed at the utilities sector. The machine – the Altec DB35 – has been available in North America for several years, but growing interest from European utilities contractors resulted in the machine being unveiled in Europe at a show in Poland in May.

The machine – currently going through the CE process – is currently being shown to potential customers by Coventry-based UK and Ireland Altec dealer Kalmar, to gauge whether there is enough of a demand to offer the machine.

The DB35 can auger to at least 3 metres
With a weight of about 3 tonnes – 3.5 tonnes with trailer – the multi-function machine is a pole transporter and lifter, a pole hole borer (to about 3 metres) and pole setter, an access platform, equipment carrier (up to 590kg) and crane. The unit is also insulated to 46kV allowing the machine to carry out live line work.

According to distributor Kalmar, interest from the utilities companies that have seen the machine in action has been excellent, so the machine will probably be available in the UK from the start of 2009. One national company saw a potential of major savings, using the machine to install up to 6-8 poles per day with 2 men rather than the current 1-2 poles with 4 men.
