Mel Sachett 1946 -2014

We can now confirm the sudden and premature death of lifelong UK crane man Mel Sachett, of Technical Lifting Solutions. He died of a sudden heart attack on Sunday, April 6th, aged 67.

He began as an office boy with British Crane Hire Corporation - BCHC (Richards and Wallington) - in the early 70’s and over the years worked for many larger crane companies including Scott Greenham, Grayston White & Sparrow, Interlift, Baldwins and Ainscough. Mostly as a depot manager or heavy cranes representative before going out on his own.

Sachett established Technical Lifting Solutions with his son Daniel in 2005, as part of the lift and haulage division of Greasbys auctioneers, which is owned by wife Christine. The company produced Risk Assesements and Method Studies for Contract Lifts and served as Appointed Person and Lift Supervisors.

In the words of one of the many people he worked with: “The industry has lost another life long crane man, recently he had retired to a consultancy basis working for principle contractors overseeing their subcontractor’s lifting operations on their sites. We worked closely during this time and really did have respect for each other and a great working relationship. This is very sad news.”

So far we have not managed to find a photograph or further information, so if you can add to this coverage we would much appreciate it.

The Funeral

The funeral service will be held on Thursday 1st May, at 13:00 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 2 Falkland Grove, Dorking, Surrey RH4 3DL. And then at 14:30 at the cemetery.

Mel worked for a crane hire company in Beddington Lane Croydon which was purchased by Grayston Plant. I believe he may have worked for Silwood Crane Hire. Mel was a charming and hard working man known by his nickname 'Satchmo'and his premature passing is very sad
