Tudor Van Hampton 1977- 2017
We have received the tragic news this morning that Tudor Van Hampton construction equipment journalist and a managing editor at the prestigious Engineering News Record has died.
Just 39 years old, he started his career in 2000 with the US access and lifting magazine Lift Equipment and went on to become editor in chief, before moving to ENR at the end of 2002.
He was a first class, highly professional journalist and wrote some exceptional articles on the crane industry including an in depth investigation into the fatal tower crane collapse in New York in 2008, for which he became a certified crane operator through the NCCCO. He was a true professional in everything he did.
Above all Tudor was an exceptional person, a class act, intelligent, considered, kind, generous, funny and a joy to spend time with. A quiet individual he had a great sense of humour, his laugh and his smile would light up the most tedious of press trips. He truly loved life along with classic cars and trucks, good music and good company.
In March he was diagnosed with an inoperable Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumour in his left temporal lobe, the speech and language area of the brain. Since then he underwent numerous treatments to try to slow the growth of the tumour. But yesterday barely 24 hours after posting a message about Conexpo, he was admitted to an inpatient hospice facility and died at dawn this morning.
He leaves behind his much cherished wife Jenie and their six year old daughter Jordan.
In an email yesterday his wife said: “Anticipating there may be inquiries about how to help, two ways come to mind:
sending a meal www.mealtrain.com/trains/oll54n or helping someone in need that is not us. Tudor believes there are far worse problems in the world than glioblastoma brain tumours, which, thankfully, are rare. He'd urge you to find some time to give a little to those who need it most.”
The world is a much poorer place with his premature departure – he will be missed by a great many of us.

Tudor was a great man and a friend during the time i was also a journalist - sadly our paths crossed less in recent years.
Tudor was a force for truth and was not afraid to shine a light on unsafe practices in our industry - alternative facts is not a phrase he would recognise.... His leadership and integrity will be greatly missed. RIP Tudor. Tim Whiteman
