US based United Rentals has completed its acquisition of Orange Hire in Australia, one of the largest regional earthmoving and traffic control rental companies on the east coast. It agreed the deal in mid May, with the shareholders of owner Arcadia Capital - Leigh Oliver and Sam Walker - which have owned it since December 2020.
Completion was scheduled for June 15th, when the company name changed to United Rentals Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Orange Hire. The existing Orange Hire management team will stay on board with no immediate operational changes planned.

Orange Hire was established in 2005 and focuses largely on earthmoving and traffic management equipment for construction including excavators, loaders, dumpers, compaction equipment, and traffic control materials. It operates from seven locations: Sydney, Central West, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Brisbane, Toowoomba/Glenvale and Riverina, covering New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

An interesting move from United, which apparently has no plans to add powered access to the Orange fleet at this time but is said to still be looking for a specialist powered access rental company in the region. This is not United’s first venture in Australia - it also owns container supplier Royal Wolf which it acquired in May 2021 when it took over its owner, General Finance Corporation.
Interesting times down under… watch out for a few more deals in the pipeline.
