David Smith leaves Kier for Empower

David Smith of Kier Construction has joined Empower training services as construction training consultant. He will be highly influential in helping Empower develop dedicated new training and consultancy services to support the construction industry.

He is an accredited lecturer and manual handling trainer for the Construction Industry Training Board, a qualified auditor, crane safety co-ordinator and slinger/rigger instructor and approved instructor for heavy plant driving and confined space rescue.

David Smith has joined Empower training

It is his experience with “hands on” involvement in risk assessment, accident investigation, auditing, traffic management and developing method statements and internal codes of practice and safe systems of working which make him ideal for training. In addition to delivering training, he will help develop new courses and provide valuable auditing support to Empower’s expanding Health and Safety team.


Empower Training Services operates from training facilities in Ratcliffe on Soar and Castle Donington and offers a variety of open courses plus bespoke health and safety training and consultancy across several sectors, including engineering and utilities, and specialises in flexible work-based learning programmes including apprenticeships.

The company is now developing its health and safety expertise by focussing on the needs of the construction industry.

On his decision to change career path Smith says: “I’d been at the sharp end for many years, witnessing some very nasty accident situations and seeing how families are devastated when the breadwinner is seriously injured or dies in a work-related incident.

“I’ve always believed the key to improving the construction industry’s accident statistics is to educate employees about prevention. Training people at all levels, from apprentices to senior management, to understand the issues and take responsibility for their actions is one of the most important aspects of good health and safety practice and I am keen to use my experience to get the message across.”
