A closer look at the crane
The crane was working on high tension pylons for the grid when the incident occurred, but was not related to the electricity as the lines had been deactivated. It seems the fire started in the crane superstructure engine compartment and spread. The operator was able to escape from the cab unharmed and no one else was involved. The problem now is to recover the crane, a Liebherr, which is left with five boom sections extended and the Y-Guy system out.
An attempted recovery yesterday never got started, so according to the contractor the manufacturer has been advised and is sending a technician to help draw up a plan of recovery.
