New Link-Belt 298 Series 2

Link Belt has launched the new 226 tonne 298 Series 2 lattice crawler crane, replacing the 298 HSL which has had a 10 year product life.

A key aspect of the new crane its new luffing jib attachment and combination boom tip section, which is used both for regular boom work and luffing duties.
With the new luffer the crane has a maximum combination of 54.8 metres of boom and a 59.4 metre luffing jib.

The new jib is considerably easier to rig thanks a special jib transport package, which includes a mechanism to automatically align the rear post, and pre-reeved nylon rope to assist with reeving the wire rope. All jib rigging can also easily be carried out from the ground.

The 298 Series 2 boom includes a new base section and a 300mm wide boom walkway. It also uses steel bar pendants with storage rather than wire rope pendants. A new retractable auxiliary lifting sheave has a capacity 22.7 tonnes and offers two parts of line. Maximum main boom length will remain the same at 18.2 to 88.39 metres.

Power comes from a cleaner Cummins QSL 9 Tier4 engine, which also offers greater fuel efficiency which when combined with Link Belt’s ECO winch system, substantially reduces operating costs, thanks to lower engine RPM under load.

The crane operator is assisted by an on-board high-resolution rear view camera -an audio/visual travel/reversing alarm system and the RCL crane monitoring system which provides the operator with all the lift information, and allows them to set slew and other control parameters creating virtual walls with audio, visual alarms and function cut out.

Scott Knight product manager, crawler cranes said: “We believe the new transport package and combination boom tip absolutely completes our customers’ wish list, while continuing to deliver great capacities. Since its introduction the 298 HSL has been placed in rental fleets across the globe – from dry docks in Brazil to tunnel construction projects in Queens, New York, logging over 12,000 hours in just two and a half years.
