All new Terex luffing jib tower crane

Terex Cranes has launched a new, completely redesigned luffing jib tower crane, the 18 tonne CTL 272-18.

The new crane was developed with extensive input and participation from major Terex tower crane customers and dealers, such as Select in the UK. The 270 tonne/metre crane offers an additional six metres of jib length - at 61 metres, compared the current CTL 260-18, and has around a 10 percent increase in lift capacities – with Terex Power Plus feature which can temporarily increase the maximum load moment under specific and conditions and operating speeds/dynamic loadings.

Seven different jib configurations are possible, ranging from 30 to 61 metres with a jib tip capacity - on the 61 metre jib at maximum radius – of 2.6 tonnes. Maximum free standing height is 84.4 metres, on a tower that can be configured using a combination of the 1.9 metre H20, 2.3 metre HD23 and 2.37 metre TS212 tower sections, allowing customers to efficiently manage tower section inventory.

The cab and the 5.8 metre counter jib - complete with winches and electrical panel - are located all on the same level for convenient, safe access. A service derrick on the counter jib offers a lifting capacity of 1.25 tonnes, for raising parts or even helping recover a sick operator.

The cab boasts large windows providing the operator with a panoramic view, and includes a fully adjustable comfort seat, short stroke joystick controls, standard air conditioning and heating and in the event of a windscreen breaking during operation, it can be replaced from the inside.

The new control system includes a seven inch colour display with antiglare screen which displays operating and troubleshooting data. In addition to Terex Power Plus, Terex Power Match enables the operator to choose between operating performance or energy efficiency to adapt to the specific application. The new crane offers the choice of hoisting with one to four parts of line, while ‘auto levelling’ automatically maintains the same hoist block height while luffing the jib

A good deal of attention has also gone into safety considerations, with a built in independent safety line, galvanised jib walkways and good deal of attention paid to preventing dropped tools or components falling through gaps in the deck to the ground below.

The CTL 272-18 can be equipped with numerous options and is pre configured for the installation and set-up of zoning and anti-collision systems and cameras. The crane is also compatible with the next generation of Terex tower telematics, which remotely reports machine operation and service data.

Massimo Cappello director of product management said: “We are extremely excited about our new CTL 272-18 tower crane, which is just the latest in a string of recent new model introductions across our hammerhead, flat top and luffing jib offerings. We worked closely with customers to include the features they need and the flexibility to meet more congested and complex building environments. Its adaptable control system gives operators the choice of operating modes to efficiently and precisely position heavy loads, and the crane is built ready to quickly accept advanced options that boost productivity and reporting capabilities.”
