Demag duo for Fanger

Swiss crane rental company Fanger has taken delivery of two new Demag All Terrains cranes with a 45 tonne AC 45 City and a 160 tonne AC 160-5.

The three axle AC 45 City replaces a 20 year old Demag AC 40 City and features a 31.2 metre full power main boom which can telescope loads of up to 19.7 tonnes, while a 7.1 to 13 metre offsettable swingaway extension takes the maximum on board tip height to over 45 metres. The crane’s IC-1 Plus control system also monitors the actual outrigger set up and slew position to calculate a specific load chart for the actual set up.

Crane & transport manager, Josef Waser, said: “We had consistently good results for the entirety of the 20 years we operated the AC 40 City, so it was only natural for us to get its successor, the AC 45 City. After all, it does everything the AC 40 City does but better. The thing we like about the new AC 45 City is its compact design in combination with a fully hydraulic main boom and a short boom base section. Moreover, the Flex Base system, which makes it possible to extend the crane’s outriggers to any point within their range, was another important plus factor, as were the large loads that can be telescoped even when the boom is in a horizontal position. That and its compact dimensions make the crane enormously versatile. And needless to say, this means that there will always be work for it and that it will be very cost effective as a result.”

The five axle AC 160-5 features a 68 metre main boom plus a 33 metre bi-fold swingaway extension and is mounted on a 2.75 metre wide carrier with an overall length of 14 metres.

Waser added: “The compact dimensions of this crane make it ideal for projects outside the 160 tonne class. For instance, it is can also carry out work normally done by 100 tonne cranes when used with a 6.3 tonne counterweight, and this keeps it within a 12-tonne axle load limit and eliminates the need for a truck to transport the counterweight.”

The company was established in 1940 by Paul Fanger-von Moos to supply building materials and began adding transport and concrete equipment in the 1950s. It purchased its first crane - a three axle truck mounted Coles lattice - in 1963 and its first telescopic in 1967. The founder passed away in 1985, with ownership and management passing to the second generation. The company added its first crawler crane in in 1991 and in 2014 the current chairman Freddy Fanger bought out his siblings - Paul and Ernst Fanger. Today the company runs a fleet of All Terrains up to 500 tonnes, crawler cranes up to 750 tonnes and a number of mobile self-erecting tower cranes from its base in Sachseln, to the south of Lucerne and Emmenbrücke on the north side of the city.
