Quarter century for Ferro

Europe’s largest telescopic crane boom section manufacturer, German based Ferro Umformtechnik has celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Founder and managing director Heinrich Dünne was 27 when he had the idea to set up the company. A master metalworker, he questioned the traditional methods of cutting and forming sheet metal and had the idea of laser cutting it at a 45 degree angle. He worked with a machine tool manufacturer to develop the first laser system featuring a swivel head, saving the time consuming angle grinding and mechanical processing required prior to welding.

Since then, he and his two business partners, Ludwig Upgang and Hermann Möllers have established the company as a technology leader in the processing of sheet metal, components and assemblies.

Today the company has 220 employees and claims to produce the boom sections, formed sections or components used on around 40 percent of all the All Terrain/truck cranes manufactured in Europe today, including the very largest telescopics. It has agreements with its key customers not to disclose their names, however it has also begun supplying a number of large aerial lift manufacturers.

Dünne said: “We have always seen possibilities rather than doubts.”
