Thomas takes Nixon equipment business

UK rental company Thomas Plant Hire has completed the acquisition of Nixon Hire’s heavier mobile equipment business, including most of its telehandler fleet, while 29 employees associated with the business have been offered jobs at Thomas.

The move adds 700 machines to the Thomas fleet and also expands its depot network with new depots in Newcastle and Stockton, taking the total to 15 locations. Last November the company acquired Scotland’s Mulholland Plant Services.

Thomas Plant was established in North Wales in June 2000, and is still family owned and managed, with group revenues of £94.5 million in the year to the end of May 2023 and a pre-tax loss of £581,000. The Thomas Plant Hire element of the business reported revenues of £43.2 million for the same period with a pre-tax profit of £324,000.

Nixon sold a lot of its telehandlers and other larger equipment off in November via a Euro Auctions sale but retained the business at its Newcastle and Stockton depots. This is part of a two step strategy to focus all of its efforts on sustainable equipment and solutions including temporary site accommodation, renewable power, portable toilets and site services. The company will still offer telehandlers through its ‘partner programme’ in other words rehire/ cross rent. We assume that as part of this deal Nixon has agreed an ongoing supply deal with Thomas, but it is remaining tight lipped on the deal.
We will update as we learn more.
