Six passengers on Calgary’s C-Train, a light rail service, have been injured and taken to hospital after the boom of a mobile crane crashed through the driver’s windscreen. The impact derailed the train.
The crane was reported as belonging to the Calgary utility company, Enmax, which also has the contract to maintain the light rail system. The accident occurred between the Brentwood and Dalhousie stations in the city's northwest. The accident removed power the city’s light rail system.
At this stage we have no information on what the crane was doing or how it happened.
UPDATE
It seems that the crane was due to work on the line and had requested a line closure and relevant singalling, but started work 15 minutes prior to the requested shut down time.
