Five crane workers die in Jakarta
Five men working on network television RCTI's broadcast tower died yesterday after they fell more than 50 metres when a sling snapped.
Police officers were still investigating the scene in Kebon Juruk, West Jakarta, but had yet to call in witnesses for questioning.
The bodies of the victims were brought to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital morgue in Central Jakarta.
According to the morgue's forensic team, the legs of all five men had been completely crushed.
"The injuries indicated they all fell from very high up and landed in a standing position,"" said Mun'im Idris, a forensic team member.
The five victims were identified as Sugiono, 29, from Brebes in Central Java; Kasiono, 43, from Jakarta; Syahrial, 39, from Jakarta; Budiono, 43, from Kediri in East Jakarta; and Sutrisno, 38, whose address is still unknown.
The five reportedly worked for contractor PT Ron Product International.
This is the latest in a long line of accidents in the Jakarta area.
Last week, another construction worker, Taufik, 25, fell to death from the 15th floor of the Menara MTH on Jl. MT. Haryono in South Jakarta. According to a witness, the scaffold on which he was working collapsed.
On July 29, Muhamad Syafei, 22, died instantly when he, along with another worker, Suryawan, fell from a crane in operation at Rasuna Epicentrum in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
The two workers fell from the 40th floor to the 20th, after the crane's sling snapped. Suryawan survived the fall, despite suffering severe injuries.
On March 6, Hadi Masliadi, 22, and Syamsul Arif, 25, died after plunging 15 meters from the ninth floor of Plaza Semanggi.
