Budget hybrid from Terex utilities
Terex Utilities has launched the new HyPower IM as part of its HyPower hybrid range of environmentally friendly systems for its aerial devices.
The new system is both lighter in weight and more affordable than the company’s full hybrid solutions, in that it does not provide a substitute for the lift functions. Designed for smaller trucks, it functions automatically with no input required from the operator. When he pulls his vehicle up to the work area and puts the transmission into Park, the system automatically engages.

A Terex Utilities LT40-HyPower IM
Essentially it stops the engine, switching to a compact 48 volt lithium ion battery pack for all ancillary functions, including cab heating and cooling. As soon as the operator engages a lift function the truck engine starts up and operates the required function through the normal PTO mounted hydraulic pump. While the engine is running the truck’s alternator tops up the lithium battery.
Terex calculations indicate that the amount of time that the lift function on a utility truck is engaged during a typical working day is around 12 to 15 percent. In spite of that the truck engine is often left idling, consuming fuel and emitting dangerous gasses. The battery pack can also be recharged from an AC power supply through its on-board charger.

The HyPower IM drive train
The new system is currently available for Class 5 Chassis, such as Ford, Dodge, and GM trucks, used with Terex Hi-Ranger telescopic aerial devices, such as the LT, LTM and TL series aerial devices.
Director of marketing Joe Caywood said: “The IM stands for ‘I am’ - I am innovative technology. I am efficient. I am lightweight. I am green. I am cost effective. HyPower IM allows fleets to meet their green initiatives.”
Product development manager Tyler Henderson added: “Throughout an eight hour work day, on a typical trouble truck, the aerial’s hydraulic controls are engaged for about one hour total run time. By allowing the hydraulic system to switch to engine power during those brief intervals, HyPower IM is still able to provide emissions efficiencies plus optimum hydraulic control function. The transition is seamless. Operators will experience no lag time in hydraulic responsiveness. HyPower IM provides an affordable solution for EEI member companies to meet Edison Electric Institute’s goal of investing five percent of annual fleet budgets to plugin vehicles and technologies. The system can be ordered with new Terex aerial devices or retrofitted on existing fleets.”

Why, when there seem to be regular reports of truck-mounts in America having their booms clipped by vehicles - do the manufacturers persist in designing units which are clearly not the best style for such work?
The European style of "reverse-articulated" with little or no knuckle seem to be eminently more logical. Some offering the facility to never leave the vehicle gaining access through the van directly into the basket.
