Terex gantry cranes for New Jersey

Terex Port Solutions has received an order for 17 NSC 624 diesel electric rubber tyred mobile gantry cranes from Canadian based terminal operator Global Container Terminals (GCT).

The new cranes, which are destined for Bayonne, New Jersey, can travel up to 20mph and are fitted with a 60 tonne twin-lift spreaders which can stack a 20, 40 or 45ft container on top of another container. Additional safety features include stability, load and tyre pressure monitoring systems as well as global positioning systems. The units will be supplied over the course of the year.

GCT is currently expanding its New Jersey port by extending the length of the quay from 548 to 822 metres with the company saying the units will support this expansion.

Guido Luini, managing director at Terex Port Solutions Würzburg, said: “GCT is one of the big four container terminal operators in North America and has locations both on the Atlantic and on the Pacific coasts. The tried and tested diesel-electric drive system we use provides low-consumption operation as well as reduced exhaust gas and noise emissions. We were the first company to introduce these machines to the market in 2001 and there are now over 850 of them in use worldwide.”

Richard Ceci, global expansion project manager for GCT, added: “We did an extensive evaluation of the competing products and Terex Port Solutions came out as the clear winner. Besides finishing on top in the technical evaluation, Terex Port Solutions also had the best commercial terms and hence the best value for our project.”

Established in 2007 Global Container Terminals is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian financial services enterprise Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. The company has four container terminals throughout North America which operate under principle businesses: TSI Terminal Systems (Vancouver and Delta, British Columbia), New York Container Terminal (Staten Island New York) and Global Terminal & Container Services (Bayonne, New Jersey).
